MANILA, Philippines, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Nearly 7,000 people have been evacuated from two provinces in the Philippines following days of relentless rain, officials with the Philippine Red Cross said.
The PRC was on standby for additional evacuations from flooded areas in Albay and Sorsogon provinces where rain showers and thunderstorms continued, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported Friday.
PRC national chairman Richard Gordon said the agency's main office in Manila and chapters in the two provinces were directed to "closely monitor" conditions, especially in areas that have been placed under a state of calamity.
PRC Secretary-General Gwendolyn Pang alerted local units to prepare all rescue equipment for possible deployment.
About 4,700 people were evacuated from Albay, and another 3,000 were evacuated from affected areas in Juban and Sorsogon provinces.
An 80-year-old woman and her 60-year-old son died in the flooding, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council confirmed.

It's the time of the year were people are busy and rushing for the Yuletide Season but it's quite sad to think, that there are some who were deprived to celebrate the season. Not to mention the situation their facing but also the problems that their will be experiencing while the whole world's enjoying. It's upsetting that the calamity happened in this times. Were our fellow countrymen are supposed to be enjoying the ambiance and the spirit of Christmas were there is wrapping gifts, buying stuffs and preparing foods. These can't be blame by/to anyone because this disaster was through our Mother Nature's undertaking. And since it's the season of sharing and giving hope our fellows esp. the government should give attention to these catastrophes were Filipino people undergoes. And not to mention the effect of these in our economy. Another hindrance for the progress of the nation and that would eventually affect the nation's economy. Calamities do have big impact to the economy because of calamities products will be affected, barters will be suspended and transportation will be cut-off and when this happens economy will flunk down and by the New Year new problems will be facing off.
